What is nuclear testing
Nuclear testing is experimentation with nuclear weapons. Throughout the twentieth century, most nations that have developed nuclear weapons have staged tests of them. Testing nuclear weapons can yield information about how the weapons work, as well as how the weapons behave under various conditions and how structures behave when subjected to nuclear explosions. Additionally, nuclear testing has often been used as an indicator of scientific and military strength, and many tests have been overtly political in their intention; most nuclear weapons states publicly declared their nuclear status by means of a nuclear test. The first atomic test was detonated by the United States at the Trinity site on...
History of nuclear testing
The first nuclear test was conducted by the United States on July 16, 1945, during the Manhattan Project, and given the codename "Trinity". The test was originally to confirm that the implosion-type nuclear weapon design was feasible, and to give the scientists and military officers an idea of what the actual size and effects of a nuclear explosion would be before they were used in combat against Japan. While the test gave a good approximation of many of the explosion's effects, it did not give an appreciable understanding of nuclear fallout, which was not well understood by the project scientists until well after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The United States conducted only six...
High altitude nuclear tests
High altitude nuclear explosions have historically been nuclear explosions which take place outside the Earth's atmosphere. Such explosions have been tests of nuclear weapons, used to determine the effects of the blast and radiation in the exoatmospheric environment. The only nations to detonate nuclear weapons in outer space are the United States and the Soviet Union. The U.S. program began in 1958, with the Teak and Orange shots, both 3.8 megatons. These warheads were initially carried on Redstone rockets. Later tests were delivered by Thor missiles for Operation Dominic I tests, and modified Lockheed X-17 missiles for the Argus tests. The purpose of the shots was to determine both feasibility of...
Volvo Powered Tota-home by Kibbi
Motor Homes to tour America in have been a big hit in the United States. Some of the most exotic looking Motor Homes are those with a Truck front end and chassis with a Motor Home back-end. Generally they call these renditions to the motor home genre; Tota-Homes. And some are extremely nice indeed. The Volvo Powered Tota-Home by Kibbi, often referred to the famous Renegade Brand, is well known with automobile racing, music singers and corporate traveling exhibit marketing teams. I have about 500,000 miles on two Tota Homes traveling the country, for business and pleasure both. I must say I have nothing but praise for the Kibbi Corporation in Indiana and their Renegade Brand. are of course many...
Where Can I Download Movies? Here Are A Few Tips
When you ask the question, "where can I download movies?" you need to weigh up three things: what is the customer service like, how easy is the site to use, and how big and varied is their selection. The competitive nature of movie download sites is such that it can be very confusing for the beginner. It's not so much, "where can I download movies" as "which site should I use to download movies from". Here are a few things to look out for...1. Look for unlimited download access, especially to new movies. If you also have access to music, games and software, then that's a bonus too.2. Does the site have a step-by-step tutorial? Most of the good ones do, and it will cut down on the learning curve, but...

Modern Earthquakes due to oil/miniral exploration & nuclear testing 17th October 2005 Author: Laxmanmurthy Ganesh Earthquake theory that blames oil / gas / mineral exploration & nuclear weapon testing for the latest disasters In this article I shall try to present you my opinion about the recent aggravation of earthquakes across the globe. A number of Earthquakes have been recorded from the time we know history. Most of the recorded ones' are those which have caused major catastrophe and damages. Also when we study history, we find that earthquakes have occurred in all continents and oceans of the Earth. Therefore, earthquakes have had a consistent record of occurring, their domain has been wide...
Surviving on Nuclear Waste
Surviving on Nuclear Waste Author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited" On May 11, 2005, Romania will host a two-day exercise simulating anuclear accident. It will be conducted at the Cernavoda nuclearpower plant. But the real radiological emergency is already at handand unfolding. Nuclear waste is both an environmental problem and an economicsolution in the countries of east Europe and central Asia. Kazakhstan announced in November 2002 that it plans to import othercountries' nuclear waste - and get paid for its shoddy disposal-by-burial, contrary to international conventions. Ironically, the money thus generated is earmarked for ridding of Kazakhstan of its own pile of fissionable trash...
Nixon Administration Tried To Prevent Israel From Having Nuclear Bombs Too
Currently the United States of America and the Bush administration want to prevent Iran from attaining nuclear weapons at all costs including possible military intervention. The President of Iran has said that they will continue their nuclear weapons program so they have a deterrent against attack from other nations in the region. The Iranian President also says that Pakistan, Israel, India and many other nations well within striking distance already have nuclear weapons and the nation of Iran have the right to protect them selves. The Iranian President says that the world allowed Israel to have nuclear weapons. But actually before Israel crosses the nuclear threshold the Nixon administration...
The War with Iran is Inevitable
There is no way now to stop a war with Iran as they have supported insurgents in Iraq and continue to fund the International Terrorist Party of Hamas. Additionally in threatening to blow Israel off the map and buying ICBM platforms from China and weapons systems from Russia, they intend on having a war. Then there is their nuclear weapons research divisions and their secret stealth missiles and underwater 4 miles per minute torpedoes they are testing. There is going to be a war as Iran continues to make threats and make weapons rather than rebuilding their cities devastated from their most recent Earthquakes. Is pre-emptive action appropriate? Well, if there was ever a time when it would be, now would...
Between Hiroshima Japan 6 August and the NY 11 September!
Japan lit its candles of pure, "noble sadness" on the 60th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The mayor of the late city, Iccho Itoh, criticized the USA for dropping the first atomic bomb in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and following that after 3 days by the second atomic bomb which attacked Nagasaki. The two bombs harvested the lives of more than 242,437 people to end the Second World War by the surrender of Japan.Iccho Itoh, urged the United States to stop the recent new nuclear policy and made an angry appeal for a global ban on nuclear weapons. He made gestures towards the International peace by asking if the United States security has enhanced by maintaining 10,000 nuclear weapons, and...
The Bush administration has finally turned in its battle against nuclear proliferation to the one Western weapon that is apparently downright omnipotent:The Almighty Dollar.Washington has begun to employ the mighty new weapon to cut off Iran and North Korea from the international financial system. As part of its devastating dollar-diplomacy, officials from the USA have met with banks overseas to warn them against doing business with Iranian and North Korean businesses that have been linked to the spread of nuclear materials and to the support of terrorist groups. In fact, the United States is threatening to bar American banks from working with financial institutions that do not hearken to the warning...
Headache Types and Treatment Options
What is headache?Headache is a term used to describe aching or pain that occurs in one or more areas of the head, face, mouth, or neck. Headache involves the network of nerve fibers in the tissues, muscles, and blood vessels located in the head and at the base of the skull.Almost everyone has occasional headaches, especially when they are sick, tired or otherwise under stress. Headache is the result of pain signals caused by interactions between the brain, blood vessels, and surrounding nerves. During a headache, the pain comes not from the brain. It comes from specific nerves surrounding the skull, head muscles, and blood vessels that are activated and send pain signals, interpreted by the brain as...
Miners and Utilities at Odds over Uranium Price Forecasts
Nowhere was it more evident of battle lines being drawn between suppliers and end users in the nuclear fuel sector than at the Platts Second Annual Nuclear Fuel Strategies conference on September 26th. Since April, various utility consultants and fuel brokers have routinely contacted StockInterview to 'talk down' the uranium price. Frequent is the mantra about how speculators and hedge funds are driving the spot uranium price higher. But spot uranium and long-term contracts march higher each month. While utilities appear complacent, there is now an underlying panic lurking beneath the surface.About an hour after UxC announced Tuesday's weekly spot price hike - now to $54/pound, Rajiv Kundalkar, Vice...
Is Evolution An Outdated Theory?
The question used to be, "Can evolution be proven?" Today, a more appropriate question is, "Is evolution science?"(The following is a condensed version of the chapter entitled "Genetics" of the book "Evolution: A Science Breakdown," available free at )To most people, science is seen as "today," modern, up-to- date, and perhaps even the promise of futuristic wonders. A generation which possesses supersonic jets, Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM's), space shuttles and sophisticated computers can hardly be called primitive. Or can it?In the midst of all of this state-of-the-art technology, there seems to be a rather primitive theory which, although steadily losing credibility even among...
Birds, Farm Animals and Even Snakes Can Predict Earthquakes
It is widely known that animals pick up precursory signs of impending Earthquakes, but what do they know that modern many in our civilization inundated with information seem to have forgotten? Has mankind grown so far from nature that he can no longer feel the same precursory clues of Earthquakes that animals can...
Yucca Mountain Burns, is Our Nuclear Waste Safe?
Yucca Mountain has a huge fire, which started from a lightening storm and burned towards Beatty NV, in one day it grew ten times the size. Part of the problem as the weather heats up this year in the Southwest is the over growth in the Desert Regions due to the intense rains storms during winter. This is now going to dry out and be fuel to the fire. This first big fire of the season has already grown to the size that 200 fire fighters are ready and waiting to attack it and some have already started to battle the blaze.Of course we are talking about a place where we store nuclear waste and we are quite concerned that it is under the greatest protection available, as we must not allow it to be harmed...
Abandoning Advanced Nuclear Weapons Testing
Will the first world nations have to stop testing advanced nuclear weapons in order to coax third world nations from developing nuclear weapons and into signing nuclear peace accords? Can the first world nations afford not to have nuclear weapons to stop a rogue nation like Iran which threatened to blow Israel off the map, sends insurgents into neighboring nations and then chooses to support International Terrorist organizations like Hamas? It is interesting that to stop a nation from doing the unthinkable you are almost forced to do the unthinkable yourself. Yet every nation including Israel has the right to protect its self from such things. The United States as much as we would like too, cannot get...
6 Ways You Can Get Better Media Coverage
One of my greatest rewards as a public relations consultant is seeing a client get considerable and positive media coverage. It builds lasting brand recognition and serves as a third-party validation for their organization and its products or services. It's great for business. But when all is said and done, that media coverage would never happen if it weren't good business for the newspaper, television station or magazine that decided to take the time to cover a client. The truth is, a television station covers what their viewers want to see. The newspapers and magazines write stories their readers want to read. It makes perfect sense that they try to give their audience what it wants because in the...
Surprise! Nuclear Plants Are All Around You
Given all the talk about energy concerns, few mention nuclear power as an alternative. It already provides a chunk of our energy needs, though most do not realize this fact.Surprise! Nuclear Plants Are All Around YouNuclear energy is one of those hot button issues that get peoples dander up. Ambivalence rarely seems to be an option. You are either in favor of using it as a power production resource or you are not.The odd thing, however, is that most people only argue in the abstract. Those in favor argue about the energy produced and getting off oil. Those against it argue about the risks in light of the disaster at Chernobyl, the risk of terrorist attacks and what to do with the radioactive waste...
The Evolution of Project Management
Importance of Project Management is an important topic because all organisations, be they small or large, at one time or other, are involved in implementing new undertakings. These undertakings may be diverse, such as, the development of a new product or service; the establishment of a new production line in a manufacturing enterprise; a public relations promotion campaign; or a major building programme. Whilst the 1980's were about quality and the 1990's were all about globalisation, the 2000's are about velocity. That is, to keep ahead of their competitors, organisations are continually faced with the development of complex products, services and processes with very short time-to-market windows...
North Korea Long Range Missile Testing and USA Threat
North Korea has now publicly stated that it has a long-range missile that is capable of reaching the United States of America and it will test wire this missile just to prove it. Indeed I have a question, where it will they fire such missile to prove it can go that Long of the distance across the Pacific Ocean.I would think that they would try to a bit at the United States of America or one of our Northern or southern allies. It seems rather unfortunate that North Korea wishes to threaten the United States of America especially considering we know that North Korea now has nuclear warheads and atomic weapons. If North Korea is to put a nuclear warheads on top of such a missile that could reach let's...
Could History Be Repeating Itself?
Recently I have been hearing the news about the wars going on, in and around Jerusalem. There is talk of mass destruction and people are wondering if we will be totally enialated. God makes it no secret that after the second coming of Christ, the world will be destroyed by fire instead of water again. But for those of us who are born again will not experience this horrendous act of destruction. By the grace of God we will have been given our one way ticket into His glory when Christ returns for His bride. But for anyone who hasn't accepted Christ as their Savior will live through the worst seven years upon this earth, the Tribulation. Just as God gave His invitation to Noah and his family to be...
Abatement and Progressive Cleaning Programs
After Natural Disasters, industrial accidents or International Terrorist attacks areas will need to be secured and abatement must occur. But how can you be sure you have fully removed the biological weapons, nuclear radiation, pollution or bio-hazards? And just because you cleaned it once how can you still be sure there are not additional issues.Sometimes the cleaning solutions you have may kill one hazard and combine with another, further you have to completely remove the solutions used from the scene so they do not seep into the ground water and separate out again at a later date. Frequency waves can be used to kill certain biological contaminants, which are organic based, but what about inorganic...
Be Prepared
Remember that Earthquakes can happen in most of the countries, anytime, without warning. Reducing hazards and knowing what to do before, during and after can make a big difference in your life. So BE PREPARED.Introduction:Earthquake occurs when shaking and vibration at the surface of the earth resulting from underground movement along a fault plane of from volcanic activityThere are basically three types of earthquake:1. Volcanic: Occurs, when any volcano abrupt in the mountainous region.2. Tectonic: Occurs, when giant tectonic plates under ground pushes or shift.3. Artificial: Occurs, when any country test their missiles or nuclear bombs within the country...
Technology and International Terrorism
Airlines do not allow cell phones on board, but they do allow AirCell a specialized new technology for in flight calls. AirCell's technology has been approved by the FCC because it uses a single regulated frequency. Normal cell phones are not allowed on flights because with the current technology a phone trying to connect with ground cell towers might connect with multiple sites and confusing the system and ties up space and could possibly interfere with avionics, which I disagree because the 900 MHz band is quite unique in its frequency characteristics and not close to the other. AirCell is the only airborne cellular system operating on a traditional cellular frequency band, which has been proven...
PALS in Pakistan Part Four - A Nuclear Precedent
The decision to provide another nuclear power with PALS technology is not unprecedented. The United States has transferred the technology successfully to Britain, France, and even to the Soviet Union in the aftermath of the Cuban missile crisis (Man). Pakistan has made indirect overtures to the United States in what seems to be a bid to obtain the devices, with Pakistani officials making public suggestions to their U.S. counterparts that cooperation of the U.S. with Pakistan on nuclear safety issues is an imperative given their relative inexperience with safety systems and nuclear weapons in general (Man). In the aftermath of September 11th, the U.S...

More Devastating Than a Nuclear Bomb
Despite their signature on the Biological Weapons Convention of 1975, it has been reported that China has the most advanced modern germ warfare arsenal in the world at Xian, Shaanxi province. As proof, information obtained using the Freedom of Information Act shows that in 1997 Clinton administration officials approved supercomputer exports to a known Chinese germ warfare lab without an end use inspection. The computer was delivered to Jiatong University, Xian. The university is a known center for bioweapons research.Furthermore, in April 2005, Deputy Director of China's Academy of Military Medical Sciences, Cao Wuchun said "China is developing technology to resist possible bioterror attacks." The...
Lease a BMW rather than a Pontiac for the same monthly payment, simply by comparing relative residua
Here are the definitions to help evaluate vehicle residual values Vehicle residual value This is the value that the manufacturer, not the dealer, says the car will be worth at the end of the lease. Sometimes it is a percent, such as 60% of the MSRP, the price of the car. A $20,000 car with a 60% vehicle residual value would have a residual value of $12,000.The lease contract says you can rent this $12,000 for x years by simply paying a percent, such as 4% of the $12,000, or .04 times $12,000 divided by 12 months or $480/12 equals $40/month Amortization The $8,000 left (the $20,000 car price minus the $12,000 residual value) is a standard loan, just like a house mortgage, which requires a monthly...
After The Implosion - What Now?
As I write, I am listening to the President announce the resignation of Don Rumsfeld. While I for one do not hold Rumsfeld solely responsible for the current situation in Iraq (there is plenty of responsibility to share) I do somehow wonder what would have been had the President started with a fairly clean slate of Secretaries and fresh eyes after the 2006 elections. It reminds me that the end effect of stasis is often disease. The Democrat Party now holds the reigns of power in the House and probably the Senate. If we are smart, we will not fall into the trap that the Democrats fell into in 2000. Allen should concede and put this to rest. We can gain nothing here in fighting to overturn a result...
Defeating Back Pain Forever
Back pain, one of the most common physical, and debilitating ailments today, affects 70% - 80% of us at one time or another in our lives. However, as a result of the obesity epidemic, that number continues to climb. So if you are suffering or have suffered from back pain, you are not alone!Back pain suffers, resulting from wear and tear and the aging process, generally are over 40 years of age; but it is not uncommon for individuals in the 30's to experience back challenges. The complex spine changes during aging at varying rates from individual to individual as determined by genetic factors, lifestyle choices, and prior injuries.Just remember, the odds are in your favor that you will experience...
Is God Causing the Earthquakes in Iran
Well it sure seems interesting that there have been so many recent Earthquakes in the Nation State of Iran. It appears Iran and its President have been in the news for all the wrong reasons, such as promising to; Blow Israel off the Map and sponsoring international terrorist organizations such as but not limited too; Hamas and Hezbollah.Iran has also been in the news for buying Chinese ICBM missiles which are 35-feet long and capable of carrying nuclear warheads over 1200 miles meaning most countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. But that is not all, as the most serious reason they have been in the news lately is because they are developing nuclear weapons, as they wish to build an...
Last Decade Not So Bad By Comparison - 1970 - Editorial Historical Review of 1900-1970
Last Decade Not So Bad By Comparison January 7, 1970 Hardly anyone has a kind word for the decade just finished. The Vietnam war, race riots, campus rebellion and political assassinations left a bad taste in the mouths of Americans. Good riddance, they say, to the "Soaring Sixties" that fizzled.Yet, it was no worse than any other decade in recent history; and in many respects it was considerably better. After all, we did conquer polio, learn how to transplant hearts and kidneys, sign a limited nuclear test ban treaty and plant the American flag on the Moon.Despite the racial strife, we made greater strides in solving our racial problems than we had in the preceding ten decades.Despite the wars in...
Solar Energy Risks To Health
Solar energy is a potential source of free electricity and water heating. It offers the power to enjoy electrical power in remote areas of the world. It seems to offer health and safety along with power, but does it? Solar energy health risks are seldom mentioned. That may be partially due to the limited use of this source of energy. It may also be due to the lack of research in this area. Some have begun to study solar energy health risks, however, and if one researches long enough, a few estimates are available. Thermal Solar Energy Health Risks Solar energy health risks are inherent to the design and installation of most thermal energy systems. These are the systems designed to heat water and air...

Ground Targets Via Space Laser Weapons
It is now possible to overwhelm our enemy from space or near space (ultra high-altitude) Blimp weapons. Right now we watch as 11 Western States have massive wild fires, most caused by lightning, but they could just as easily be caused by laser weaponry. Like a lightning bolt from God, airborne laser weapons could wreak havoc on an enemy. Today the United States Air Force Research Laboratory is testing airborne laser weapons where a THEL type system is put inside of a 747 Boeing Jet Aircraft.THEL stands for Tactical High Energy Laser and they are made to shoot down incoming missiles from the enemy. such as the SCUD missiles that Saddam Hussein had shot at Israel during Gulf War I can now be shot down...
Bush sent North Korea $55 Million, but Wanta $4.5 Trillion still not turned over to American people
Michael C. Cottrell, treasurer for the Wanta financial group set to repatriate $4.5 trillion into the U.S. economy, said he received documented inside information the Bush administration sent North Korea $55 million the day after it set off a nuclear testing device. Cottrell's announcement Thursday came as a shock to the world since it previously was thought the U.S. was strongly opposed to North Korea's actions, publicly denouncing the nuclear testing and indicating strong financial sanctions should be imposed. However, the transfer of money to North Korea, taken from the offshore and off-the books account earmarked for Ambassador Leo Wanta and the American people, shows the real behind the scenes...
An Overview of Nuclear Energy
In the effort to get away from our oil and coal dependency, nuclear energy is getting attention again. Here is an overview of nuclear energy.Harnessing a chemical reaction at the nuclear level of certain materials produces nuclear energy. The process is known as nuclear fission.Nuclear fission occurs when certain materials, such as uranium, are manipulated in a manner that causes them to decay quickly. A byproduct of this decal is immense amounts of heat. The heat is then typically used to turn turbines much as occurs in hydropower dams. The spinning turbines produce electricity, which is then used for commercial applications and propelling naval vessels such as submarines. The largest known nuclear...
West Phoenix Suburbs Explode With Growth
West Phoenix, AZ growing at an alarming rate. During our heated visit recently, we studied the economic vitality of Avondale, Goodyear, Litchfield and Tolleson. This area is the fastest growing area of all of Phoenix which is the second fastest metro DMA area in the United States of America. Maricopa County is #2 next to Clark County in Las Vegas NV metro. Surprise, Glendale and Goodyear are breaking all kinds of records as the Governor looks at the issues of water and future resources. We of course do our homework on economic factors before we attempt to enter a region as most seasoned veteran business people do.In Avondale the population is growing and currently about 36,000 population. 33% of...
There is a long list of career paths that may interest those who wish to help make the world a safer place for us all. Careers in police work, fire fighting, and ambulance service may come to mind. However, there are other careers -important careers- that also play an equally pivotal role, but many of those careers are lesser known than their high profile counterparts. A fire alarm technician is one of those careers. A fire alarm is a critical element of safety that each of us relies upon for our personal safety at work, home, and play. Fire alarms save lives and protect property each and everyday, and not one of us would ever consider buying a home or working in an office that did not have a...
US at War; What are the Implications?
I was reading an issue of New York Times magazine and it said the North Koreans fired 6 missiles on July 6 and caused an international furor. I googled it and found over a million listings that developed in the last two weeks about the incident. I also found out that India also is testing nuclear warheads and got me to thinking, hmm. What does this mean? Well, the unpopular war in Iraq has cost US over 300 trillion dollars in the last few years and Bush administration's war in terrorism was caught off guard over North Korea's incident. Clearly with most of US armed forces stationed at the Gulf Coast, US cannot possibly destroy the nuclear arsenal in North Korea, although it has the capability to do...
Rockets For Peace...
July 6th, 2006 8:07PM California TimeIs North Korea actually able to threaten the United States mainland with Nuclear Warheads?Of course not, but it makes a great headline. In fact, in researching this article I found that every headline read similarly. The content of each article did not answer these questions with the 'YES!' that the titles implied.First and foremost, the point:The United States of America cannot dictate to sovereign nations (in this case North Korea) on whether or not the nation is allowed to test Rockets. Why not? Well for one thing, we're testing them ourselves constantly. The picture above shows the launch of a highly classified spy satellite known only as NROL-22, launched on...
The watch has made many transformations through the years. There have been many modifications and technological advancements that have made it possible to wear them on your wrist and tell the time with a push of a button! Unlike the watches made many centuries ago, the watches of today offer cutting edge technology and modern day convenience features. The watch is steeped in history and has seen us through World Wars and Nuclear Warfare. At the end of time, there's no doubt that we'll use a watch to make note of the date/time! To truly understand the evolution of the watch, we must take a journey into the past. The first timekeeping device was actually a pocket watch. Though, back in the day, they...
Do As The Romans Do!
Well folks; its about time to make war!You would think that we have enough on our hands, what with the present war in Iraq, and the ongoing "American-like actions" of Iran! The Iraqi people now in power with a newly established government is on the job! Problem is; they still think they are all self-employed! You can see that, right? The government now in power in the United States is giving us a lot of "news" that the Iraqi government is going great guns, and making "headway" into the populace, as far as getting them on the "democratic" side of viewing their country. However it is just too plain that the reality is much different than the "government owned media" would have us believe! The reality of...
Iran Wants Talks With the United States of America
It is rather interesting with all the promises to blow Israel off the map and the sponsoring of International Terrorism; not to mention sending Insurgents into Iraq and building nuclear weapons, as well as buying sophisticated ICBM missiles and high-tech military hardware that Iran wants to now discuss peace.Obviously such actions are not peaceful exhibits of a humble and caring nation. Now the World Media is saying that this rhetoric is just saber rattling and that both sides perceive this issue differently...
Chest Pain During Cold Weather Exercise
Exercising in cold weather can cause chest pain in some people who have no problems when they exercise in warm weather. When cold wind blows on your face, your heart rate slows down. This decreases the blood flow to the heart and can cause pain in people with blocked coronary arteries. The blood supply to your heart muscle comes from arteries on its outside surface. The blood that is pumped inside your heart's chambers brings almost no oxygen to your heart muscle. If you have arteriosclerosis, the fatty plaques in your heart's arteries restrict the flow of blood to your heart. Your heart has to pump rapidly to meet its needs for oxygen. A cold wind slows your heart, reducing the flow of blood. If the...
Public Procurement and Very Private Benefits
In every national budget, there is a part called "Public Procurement". This is the portion of the budget allocated to purchasing services and goods for the various ministries, authorities and other arms of the executive branch. It was the famous management consultant, Parkinson, who once wrote that government officials are likely to approve a multi-billion dollar nuclear power plant much more speedily that they are likely to authorize a hundred dollar expenditure on a bicycle parking device. This is because everyone came across 100 dollar situations in real life - but precious few had the fortune to expend with billions of USD.This, precisely, is the problem with public procurement: people are too...
Iran Continues To Star As The Mouse That Roared
Hardly a day goes by that we don't hear diminutive Iran roar like a lion about its nuclear ambitions. Or growl about its mighty power by launching yet another flight of missiles. Yet among the world's most powerful nations Iran remains inarguably diminutive. So, regardless of all the bluster, it can never be more than the mouse that roared. The powers that be can observe and even indulge Iran, but they know quite well that the mouse better behave itself, because they can always give in a backhand and send it sprawling across the floor and scurrying back into its hole. Are we attempting to make fun of the descendants of the Darius? No. We have a more considerate goal. Our intention is to reveal that...
A Clearer and More Present Danger
There have been endless debates over the moral justification for the preemptive strike against Iraq. Suffice to say such action, to be even considered justified, must be in proportionate response to the documented authenticity, severity and immediacy of the threat in question. I will pass on that particular debate for now, but as to the justification for or morality of a preemptive strike per se, it would be foolhardy to reject such an option out of hand. Case in point: Iran.Iran, a country whose president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, recently demanded that "Israel must be wiped off the map" and whose totalitarian regime punishes "un-Islamic" behavior among its own people. Iran, a country which has...
